Kelly Hoppen: Kelly Hoppen and Nicky Clarke back T for Tibet campaign
The campaign encourages both members of the public, and athletes attending the Olympics in Beijing, to show their support for Tibet during the Games by making a “T” sign with their hands. Free Tibet Campaign has written to British athletes attending the Games, encouraging them to make a “T” sign as a demonstration of support for Tibet.
Free Tibet is hoping that, as the Olympics approach, the campaign will quickly go global as making the “T” sign becomes a universally recognisable symbol of solidarity with the Tibetan people.
To help embed the signal in the public psyche, the campaign has enlisted the support of celebrities, many of whom have been photographed already making the “T” sign. Celebrity supporters for “T for Tibet” include: Michael Stipe of REM; film director, Ridley Scott; actors and actresses Jeremy Irons, Joanna Lumley, Anna Chancellor, Tim Piggott-Smith, Amanda Donohoe and Philip Glenister; comedians Susan Murray and Shazia Mirza and renowned artist, Ralph Steadman.
A host of British parliamentarians has also backed the campaign and have been photographed making the “T” sign opposite the House of Commons.
